All About Gout

Gout, a form of arthritis, is a painful inflammation of the joints that often develops in the big toe. Men aged about 40 or 50 and older adults who use diuretics are most commonly affected by gout. When the body is unable to rid itself of excess uric acid, small crystals may form that collect in the joints. The result is dramatic, sometimes happening overnight as the joint turns red, swells, and becomes very painful. Although gout can run in families, other factors may contribute to its development. Among them are excessive alcohol intake, not drinking enough water, obesity, and eating certain foods. One of the major ways to reduce the risk of gout is to change dietary habits. Refraining from food and beverages with high purine content, such as organ meat, red meat, seafood, and alcohol, can help. In addition, certain medications are known to help reduce uric levels. If you are experiencing symptoms related to gout, please seek the care of a podiatrist who can provide treatment options.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Types of Surgery for Hammertoe

A hammertoe is noticeable by the center joint of the toe forming a mountain-like shape rather than lying flat. Hammertoes can be caused by muscle imbalance, rheumatoid arthritis, or wearing shoes that fit improperly. The raised joint becomes painful as it rubs against the top of the shoe and can cause corns or calluses to develop. If the hammertoe is in a fixed position some form of surgery may be the best remedy for eliminating the symptoms that coincide. One solution is to remove parts of the toe bones. A second option is cutting or transplanting tendons in the toe. A third plan is to straighten the toe by fusing the bones which also keeps it from bending. It is strongly urged to seek the counsel of a podiatrist to decide which alternative is best for you.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Signs of Cracked Heels

One of the many unsightly and unattractive conditions of the feet is known as cracked heels. Also known as heel fissures or split heel, this condition occurs when the skin on the heel becomes exceedingly dry. There are several signs of cracked heels that you can be on the lookout for. First, the most obvious sign of cracked heels is a developing callus on the heel that can be either a shade of yellow or brown. If the condition is relatively new, you might notice small cracks in the hardened skin callus. However, if this condition is older and has not been treated for a long period of time, then there may be deeper cracks in the callus. These deeper cracks might even bleed in severe cases, inviting infection. If you notice any of these signs, or you believe that you might have cracked heels, do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today.

Cracked heels are unsightly and can cause further damage to your shoes and feet. If you have any concerns, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

Cracked heels appear unappealing and can make it harder for you walk around in sandals. Aside from looking unpleasant, cracked heels can also tear stockings, socks, and wear out your shoes. There are several methods to help restore a cracked heel and prevent further damage.

How Do You Get Them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – Wearing socks with medicated creams helps lock in moisture.

Moisturizers – Applying both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – These exfoliate and remove dead skin, which allows for smoother moisturizer application and better absorption into the skin.

Change in Diet

Eating healthy with a well-balanced diet will give the skin a fresh and radiant look. Your body responds to the kinds of food you ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc supplements can also revitalize skin tissue.

Most importantly, seek professional help if unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels. A podiatrist will help you with any questions or information needed.

Many people throughout the world take their feet for granted. The feet are complex structures and carry the weight of the body. Foot pain can happen when the feet are neglected, and this can make completing daily activities difficult to accomplish. When the feet feel good, a patient's overall attitude may be improved. There are simple methods that can be implemented that the feet can benefit from. These consist of washing the drying the feet daily, followed by using a good moisturizer, which may be helpful in preventing cracked heels. It is imperative that shoes are comfortable and fit correctly, which may be beneficial in helping to avoid unwanted foot conditions. It is suggested that high heels be worn infrequently, and the toenails are trimmed properly. Many people check the bottoms of their feet for existing cuts, bruises, or scrapes, and this is especially important for diabetic patients to do. If you would like more information about the importance of practicing everyday foot care, please confer with a podiatrist who can offer effective tips to maintain the health of the feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.
