Foot Care and Aging

As one ages, it is important that foot care be maintained as their feet have worked for them for a long time and are apt to suffer from some wear and tear. At the least, an elderly person’s feet tend to flatten, widen, and have less padding that leaves bones and joints more unstable. Seemingly small problems like ingrown toenails or a minor cut can result in a barrage of health conditions that can impact an older adult’s health and well-being. Having healthy feet helps seniors to remain mobile, independent, and upright. Essential to good foot care are keeping one’s feet clean, proper drying and moisturizing of feet, wearing well-fitting socks and shoes that do not rub or cause friction, trimming toenails straight across, and monitoring any developing sores. An elderly person who cannot do these things for themselves, can enlist the services of a podiatrist and through regular visits, keep their feet in tip-top shape, and prevent burgeoning problems from worsening.

If you need your feet checked, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM of Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs and provide you with quality treatment.

Geriatrics and Podiatry
When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health if the necessary steps are not taken to alleviate the problems.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseased can affect your overall health. Having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities or may decrease your willingness to do the things that you need to do.

Visiting Your Geriatrician
As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups to ensure that you are doing the best you can to take care of your health. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns or any other irregularities.

Taking Care of Elderly Feet
Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer often. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock is, the higher the possibility there will be that there is bacteria there. Wear fresh socks and make sure they fit properly.

Proper foot health means that you can have a more active lifestyle and you will not be bogged down by pain. Foot health also leads to good circulation, which is paramount for overall health.

Middle joints in the second, third, and fourth toes can sometimes become deformed due to an imbalance in tendons, muscles, and ligaments. When this occurs, the toe is unnaturally bent with the middle joint stuck in an upward position while the rest of the toe is bent downward. This deformity causes the toe to look almost like a hammer, which is why it is known as hammertoe. Mallet toe is similar, however, the joint nearest the nail is affected. The factors that can contribute to hammertoe include wearing high heels or other footwear that crowds the toes, throwing the toes out of alignment by stubbing or injuring them, having an imbalance in the toe muscles due to age or other conditions, inheriting a second toe that is longer than the big toe, and suffering from diabetes, arthritis, or other conditions that compromise the feet. It is important to seek treatment from a podiatrist in the early stages of hammertoe, while the toe is still flexible, and the condition is more easily correctable. If your toe is always bent or it looks red or feels stiff or painful at the joint, it is a good idea to make an appointment with a podiatrist to get it examined and to discuss your treatment options.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM of Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.

Falling can be a common occurrence for people who are age sixty-five years and older. It can emotionally and physically change lives, and it is important to practice fall prevention techniques. These can include having routine visual and physical examinations, monitoring blood pressure, and reviewing existing medications. Additionally, it may be necessary to alter living conditions by replacing worn rugs, improving lighting, and installing grab bars in the shower and toilet areas. It is beneficial to wear shoes that fit correctly, as this may help to reduce the number of falls. Slippery surfaces that can include hardwood floors can be minimized when rugs are used. Falling can affect the feet and can negatively impact everyday activities. If you would like more information about how to prevent falling, please schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Your feet are covered most of the day. If you're diabetic, periodic screening is important for good health. Numbness is often a sign of diabetic foot and can mask a sore or wound.

When Your Feet Sweat Excessively

Hyperhidrosis,” or excessive sweating, can impact the feet. Feet can sweat for a variety of reasons, such as heat, vigorous exercise, pregnancy, shoes that do not fit properly, stress, overuse of feet, side effects of certain medications, or an underlying medical condition like diabetes or thyroid disease. When foot sweat is not cleaned up it can get trapped between toes, which can allow bacteria to grow and enter a cut or ingrown toenail, become infected, and lead to smelly feet (also known as “Bromodosis”). It makes good sense to wash and dry the feet regularly, as well as to wear proper footwear. Additional at home remedies can include foot powders and antiperspirants or medicated insoles. People more apt to develop these types of foot infections are seniors, diabetics, those undergoing hormonal changes (like in pregnancy), and those with compromised immune systems. Such infections must be tended to immediately. If your feet continue to sweat and smell and regular foot hygiene measures do not solve the problem, or if you notice an infection festering, a visit to a podiatrist is suggested for proper diagnosis, a better understanding of the root cause of the problem, and more aggressive treatment.

If you are suffering from hyperhidrosis contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM of Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor can provide the care you need to attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.
